Who is Influencing the Masses?

I have been thinking about this question, and contemplating who are the top 5 most influential people in the United States? Who are the people who are truly shaping what we think, how we believe, how we function, entertaining us, affecting our way of life? Who are the voices that are being heard the loudest in our society? I would love to hear who you think the 5 people are and why you chose them.

My thoughts are: Oprah Winfrey, George W Bush, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Steven Colbert

What about for teenagers? Who are the top 5 voices they are listening to?

  1. interesting question to ask. I think speaking on a broad spectrum you have nailed it, though I don’t see Bill Gates as being that influential of a voice, now given that you also said shaping how we live, Gates is acceptable, but not as the voice being heard. Jobs is way more in that role than Gates.

  2. Darrell, I keep trying to think who I would add to the mix. And having a hard time coming to good conclusions. The best conclusion I can come to is that there are a few people that we haven’t heard of, who are in charge of media programming(i.e. heads in Viacom) who have much more influence than we imagine. Particularly when they control so many different venues for media…

For teenagers, I can certainly say we would have to list MTV.

I just keep coming back to the fact that there’s a lot of marketing folk who are using focus groups to create a stereotype for different age groups which they use for marketing, television, etc. And that then their stereotype ends up influencing people(if correctly marketed) to be like the stereotype…

Kind of crazy, but it’s certainly the way I’m thinking(particularly with youth culture)
